課程概述

Course Description:
Unlike what is normally expected in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classrooms where students “learn to use English,” this course is designed to help and guide students to “use English to learn,” in your development of the four integrated* skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In other words, the focus of this course is not only on the product but also on the process of learning. Students are thus expected to take full responsibility for their own learning and to take an active role in class, through a variety of exercises/activities which would provide them with opportunities for individual reflection, pair/small-group work, as well as outside-of-class assignments. The themes/topics chosen for class materials are kept to be up-to-date, varied, and yet interesting enough for students to get and feel personally involved in making meaning. Teacher-prepared course packet will be used mainly for reading and writing purposes; and Listen Up, for listening and speaking.
*It should be noted that the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing can not really be separated. The increase in one will positively affect and interact with the others to produce a corresponding increase in overall language ability.

課程目標
Using English to learn, How?
This is the method called “learning by doing”. You use English to learn English by doing presentation, by looking up the new words, by searching for the main idea, by coming up with questions. That’s why each group is required to take part in different positions in different readings. The more you do, the more you learn. The more you read, the better you can write. The more you listen, the more able you are to speak. That’s the idea.

課程要求
1. You are urged to exercise self-discipline and live by a study schedule once you join us here at NTU because, in college, no one forces you to do anything.
2. Due to the process-oriented nature of the course, those who do the preview before class, attend the class dutifully as scheduled, and who are willing to participate fully in class activities and discussions will benefit most from taking such a course.
3. Assigned by the instructor, groups take turns in doing presentations for the class readings. For each reading selection, three different groups will be involved: one for new words and phrases, another for main ideas, and the other for raising questions. In other words, each group would take part in three readings, responsible for three different tasks. Groups would be assigned to either reading 2,4,6 or 3,5,7. If you have a special preference over one reading, contact the group assigned to that reading. If both groups agree, then you can swap, and make sure to let me know the result.

4. By lot drawing, groups take turns in sharing with the class your favorite English song or poem, the content of which should be posted on the course website no later than Monday.
5. On the dates where Listen Up is indicated, other than turning in the homework, an in-class listening quiz, in the form of a cloze test, will also be given for the unit assigned for that particular week. A partial recording from the CD will be playing while you fill in the blanks on the test paper.
6. On the last five minutes before the course ends each week, I expect each of you to take out a small piece of paper and write down
(83dc) What is the main point of the course today?
(83dc) Any questions? Write it HERE
(83dc) Any suggestions or opinions?
It’s fine to hand in a blank piece of paper. But the more you feed back, the more you learn from this class!!
